How Does It Work?

1. Your liver sets your LDL, not your diet.

LDL leaves your blood through receptors on your liver cells. Think of each one as a drain. More drains open, lower LDL. Diet controls what goes in. Receptors control what comes out. If your number stalled on a careful diet, you have an "out" problem, and no amount of oatmeal fixes that.

2. Every LDL drug works by opening more drains.

Statins block cholesterol production, so the liver builds more receptors. But that enzyme runs in every cell, including muscle, which is why aches, fog and poor sleep follow some people. PCSK9 injections protect the receptors you already have. Effective, but a prescription, a needle and a fight with insurance.

3. Berberine is a third door to the same room.

Inside a liver cell, the order to build a receptor is a short-lived message, normally shredded within hours. Berberine protects that message, so it's read more times and more receptors get built. Production is untouched. Muscles never enter the story.* That's why the Nature Medicine paper that discovered it called berberine a cholesterol-lowering drug with "a unique mechanism distinct from statins."

  • A different mechanism: raises the LDL receptors your liver uses to clear LDL. Statins cut production. Berberine opens more drains*

  • Works where diet can't: fiber and less saturated fat control what goes in. This works on what comes out*

  • Not a hidden statin: red yeast rice is lovastatin in a plant costume. Berberine HCl doesn't touch that enzyme*

  • 1,200mg berberine HCl per serving, the trial dose, in two 600mg delayed-release capsules, every lot tested

  • Blood sugar moves the right way: HbA1c down about half a point in double-blind trials, comparable to metformin*

  • Less than 1% is absorbed, most of it by the liver. Any side effects stay in the gut, nowhere else*

Two capsules with a meal, every day. Keep the fiber, the walks and your doctor.

What Can Nativia Berberine Help With?

🩸 LDL That Won't Move

Diet done, number stuck? Your liver isn't clearing LDL fast enough. Berberine raises the receptors that do the clearing: about 18 mg/dL lower in placebo-controlled trials, 21% in the best-designed one.* 76% of surveyed customers reported better panel readings.*

📋 The Whole Panel, Not One Line

apoB, triglycerides and total cholesterol came down versus placebo in both the 2023 pooled analysis and the 2026 JAMA Network Open trial.*

🍬 Borderline Blood Sugar & Insulin Resistance

One of berberine's most potent effects. HbA1c down about half a point, fasting glucose down, comparable to metformin in small head-to-heads.* Statins nudge sugar up. This moves it the other way.*

💊 The Statin You Couldn't Live With

Berberine doesn't block the enzyme statins block, so muscle aches, fog and broken sleep aren't in play.*

🌡️ The Menopause Jump

LDL and insulin resistance both climb when estrogen drops. Berberine works on both, and women in the pooled analysis also saw a small rise in HDL, the "good cholesterol."*

🔥 Quiet Inflammation

hs-CRP came down versus placebo in the 2026 trial.*

⚡ Energy & Getting Around

72% of surveyed customers reported more energy and greater mobility.*

😮‍💨 The Worry

91% of surveyed customers reported less anxiety about their cholesterol, and 87% better mental health within 3–6 months.* A plan with a number and a date on it does that.

📏 Waist

Berberine has shown a real, modest effect on waist size in some clinical trials.*

When Will I See Results?
  • 📅 Weeks 1–3: Building Up

Berberine is drug-strength, not an herb, so always take it with food. Two capsules with a meal is the full 1,200mg. If your stomach is sensitive, start with one capsule a day for the first week, or split the two across breakfast and dinner, and build up from there. Fasting glucose can move within the first week. You won't feel your LDL changing. Nobody does.

  • 📆 Weeks 4–8: The Liver Has More Drains Open

The window most placebo-controlled trials measured in. Nothing dramatic on the outside, but your liver is clearing more LDL every week. Around 8 weeks is the earliest a lipid panel is worth doing. It's also where your 60-day guarantee ends, on purpose: decide with a number, not a feeling.

  • 📈 Week 12: Retest, and Decide With a Number in Hand

The 21% trial ran 12 weeks.* So: 12 weeks, then a panel. LDL, apoB if you can get it, triglycerides, fasting glucose. 76% of surveyed customers reported improvement on their readings.* Then decide, with your doctor and a real number. The effect wears off if you stop, so most people who see the drop keep going.

How Do I Take It & Are There Side Effects?

2 capsules a day, with a meal.

Berberine is a potent, natural compound and because of this potency, some people can have side effects such as GI issues, stomach aches and cramps.

These are due to the fact that berberine can disrupt gut bacteria and impact how food and fluid move through your digestive system.

This is why we recommend that you take berberine with a meal, not on an empty stomach. This helps ensure your stomach absorbs berberine more effectively with fewer side effects.

That being said, the side effects are only present in a small subset of people. Most people have little to no side effects at all.

Note: For some individuals who are particularly sensitive to gut-related side effects, we recommend you take half a serving (1 capsule of Nativia Berberine = 600mg berberine HCl) with a meal daily, and slowly build your way up to the full dosage.

How Long Until I Get It?

Orders are processed and shipped from our fulfillment center within 1–2 business days. Most customers receive their package within 5–12 business days, depending on location.

You'll receive a tracking number as soon as your order ships.

Who Is It For?

For people over 50 with LDL between 130 and 190 who've done the diet and been told to "watch and wait" or "just take the statin." Especially:

  • You did everything right and the number barely moved

  • You tried a statin and got the aches, fog, cramps or insomnia

  • You're borderline, wary of a statin, and want a real step before a prescription

  • You're on a small statin dose and want something that adds to it, with your doctor's blessing

  • Your numbers jumped at menopause, or fasting glucose is creeping up alongside LDL

  • You quit a berberine before because of your stomach. The dose, capsule and plan here were built for that

Unlike fiber, sterols, bergamot or red yeast rice, this works at the receptor level, with a Nature Medicine mechanism and placebo-controlled trials behind it.*

One honest note: Nativia is a dietary supplement, not a replacement for anything prescribed. Don't stop or change a medication without your doctor. If you have known plaque, a prior heart attack or stroke, familial hypercholesterolemia or high Lp(a), you need the therapies with outcome trials, and berberine can only be an add-on your clinician agrees to. Don't take it if pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. On a statin, blood thinner, diabetes medication, metoprolol, cyclosporine or tacrolimus? Show the label to your pharmacist first.

Why Your LDL Won't Budge on Oatmeal, Walking and No Cheese

It starts with a blood test. LDL 160, maybe 180. "Eat less fat, exercise more." So you do. Oatmeal, beans, salmon. The butter goes, then the cheese. You walk every day.

Six months later it's 158. Or higher. Now you're eating like a monk, and the only options are a prescription you've heard too much about, or "watch and wait."

We analyzed 1,249 people describing exactly this. 46 said their doctor wouldn't treat them. Of those who tried a statin, 216 said it made things worse: aches, fatigue, fog, insomnia.

Here's why the diet stalls. Diet controls what goes in. Your LDL is set by how fast your liver pulls it out, through receptors on its cells. Think of them as drains. Too few drains, and the number barely moves whatever you eat. You've been working on the tap. Nobody has touched the drain.

A Third Route to a Lower LDL, Through the Drain Not the Tap

Nativia Berberine jar: 1,200mg berberine HCl per serving from Berberis aristata bark, two 600mg delayed-release capsules, 30 servings

Every drug that reliably lowers LDL gives your liver more drains. Statins cut production in every cell. PCSK9 injections protect the receptors you already have. Berberine protects the short-lived message that tells a liver cell to build a receptor, so more get built. Production untouched. Muscles never involved.*

A 2004 Nature Medicine paper called it "a new cholesterol-lowering drug" with "a unique mechanism distinct from statins." You may know berberine as the "natural GLP-1" thing. The 2026 trial that showed it does nothing for weight is the same one that confirmed it lowers LDL and apoB.*

In human studies, berberine HCl has been shown to:

  • Lower LDL by 21% in three months in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial*
  • Reduce LDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides and apoB across 14 placebo-controlled trials and 1,447 people*
  • Lower LDL, apoB and hs-CRP versus placebo over six months*
  • Lower HbA1c and fasting glucose, comparable to metformin*
  • Reduce HbA1c by 0.63% across 37 trials, without causing low blood sugar*
  • Be taken daily for two years by 1,108 people with no serious adverse events*

Nativia is the trial-matched dose and form, nothing else: 1,200mg berberine HCl per serving in two 600mg delayed-release capsules, taken with a meal.

Real Feedback from Nativia Customers with High Cholesterol

In a recent customer survey, users reported:

87% of users reported better mental health within 3–6 months of daily use.*
72% reported more energy & greater mobility.*
91% of users reported less anxiety about cholesterol health.*
76% reported improvement on their panel readings.*

*In a self-reported survey of 431 customers conducted by Nativia in 2025. Individual results may vary.

Two Capsules With a Meal. One Habit That Works on the Side Diet Can't Reach.

The goal isn't to manage your cholesterol harder. It's to stop being stuck between a diet that's done all it can and a prescription you don't want yet.

  • Instead of Cutting Even More Out of Your Diet: Fiber and less saturated fat work on what goes in. Berberine works on what comes out. Keep the fiber. Add the drain.*
  • Instead of a Statin You Can't Live With: Statins cut production in every cell, so muscles and sleep can pay. Berberine raises receptors without touching that enzyme. The step before, or partner to, a small statin. Never the replacement.*
  • Instead of Fighting Insurance for an Injection: PCSK9 drugs protect the receptors berberine helps build, and "it was a battle to get Repatha" was the top complaint. This is oral, over the counter, shipped in two days.
  • Instead of Red Yeast Rice: Lovastatin in a plant costume, same muscle risk, dose varies by bottle. Berberine HCl is not a hidden statin.
  • Instead of Bergamot, Sterols and Nattokinase: Hopeful and unproven. Berberine has several double-blind placebo RCTs.*
  • Instead of "Watch and Wait": A 12-week protocol with a retest gives you a number, a date, and your doctor something to react to.
  • Instead of a Berberine That Sends You Running for the Bathroom: Half of 1-star berberine reviews report a side effect, usually from too much at once on an empty stomach. Delayed-release capsules, always taken with food, and a gentle start-up option for sensitive stomachs fix that.

Real Stories From People Who've Tried Everything

Margaret H. holding up a jar of Nativia Berberine
“Rosuvastatin got my LDL down to 90 and I couldn't walk to the mailbox. Thighs on fire, couldn't remember words mid-sentence, three hours of sleep. My doctor said it wasn't the statin. I'm 52, I know my own body. Came off it, LDL went back to 172. Started these because they work on the liver without blocking the enzyme statins block, and honestly I was braced for the same thing. Twelve weeks in, no aches, sleeping again, and my panel came back at 139. Not 90. But I can live in this body.”

“I'm a retired engineer and I think most supplement research is a high school science fair. So I went looking to tear this one apart. The number they quote is about 18 mg/dL on average and they say so, which is more honest than anyone else selling the stuff. My LDL was 168 after two years of a clean diet. Took two with dinner for twelve weeks, same diet, retested at 141. Small, real, repeatable. That's all I asked for.”

Half a statin tablet gave me cramps, and the berberine reviews on Amazon were all nausea and bathroom emergencies, so I was very hesitant but what else did I have to lose? I did one capsule with dinner the first week just in case. Not one bad day. Four months on, dose up to 1200mg a day, fasting sugar's down too, which my doctor was more excited about than I was.”

“Lost 28 pounds, walk five miles a day, haven't touched butter in two years, and my LDL went UP eleven points. Doctor said keep doing what you're doing and we'll check again in a year. A year! I wanted to try something before a prescription and this was the first thing that explained why the diet had stopped working: it's the liver clearing it, not what I eat. Showed my doctor the studies, he said go ahead. Retested at week 12 and he's now the one saying keep doing what you're doing.”

What To Expect Over Time

Berberine works by giving your liver more LDL receptors, built over days and weeks. Here's what's happening at each stage.

  1. 🗓️1 Week

The first week on two capsules with a meal. Nothing to feel yet, and that's expected. Your liver is getting its first steady daily dose, and the receptor response starts here.*

    • Sensitive stomach? Start with one capsule a day and build up over the first weeks
    • Fasting glucose can move in week one. On diabetes medication? Tell your doctor
  2. 🗓️1 Month

A month of 1,200mg a day. In your liver cells, the "build a receptor" message is lasting longer and being read more times.*

    • More receptors, more LDL pulled from your blood each day*
    • Stomach usually settled. If not, the insert says when to step back
  3. 🗓️2 Months

The window most lipid trials measured in, and the earliest a panel is worth doing.*

    • Your 60-day guarantee ends here, on purpose: decide with a number, not a feeling
    • HbA1c comes down without low blood sugar, because berberine only acts when glucose is high*
  4. 🗓️3 Months

Retest. The best-designed trial ran 12 weeks: LDL down 21%, triglycerides down 36%.*

    • Ask for LDL, apoB, triglycerides and fasting glucose. 76% of surveyed customers reported improvement*
    • Now you have something concrete to take to your doctor
  5. 🗓️6 Months

In the most rigorous trial, 337 people took 1g a day for six months. LDL, apoB and hs-CRP stayed lower than placebo. Side effects matched placebo.*

    • The effect wears off if you stop, so most people who saw the drop keep going
    • 91% of surveyed customers reported less anxiety about their cholesterol*
  6. 🗓️12 Months

A habit you and your doctor chose with real numbers. 1,108 people took berberine for two years in a Lancet trial with no serious adverse events.*

Atorvastatin dropped LDL from 181 to 95 and took the legs with it. Calf cramps at 2am, stairs at work impossible, brain fog worse than the cholesterol. Rosuvastatin, same story. Tried these because they don't block the enzyme statins block. No cramps. Twelve weeks on the same diet, LDL 142. Not 95, but sleeping, walking, and the doctor is fine with it as a starting point.

Retired chemistry teacher. Most of the supplement industry is a science fair with a marketing budget, so this got a hard look. The actual abstracts are on the page, including the trial where it failed for weight loss. Nature Medicine for the mechanism, a double-blind placebo trial at the same dose, a JAMA trial this year, and the average quoted honestly at about 18 mg/dL. One-star berberine reviews are horror stories: nausea, cramps, bathroom emergencies. Nearly a hard pass. What changed the decision was the explanation. Almost none is absorbed, so the gut takes the whole dose, and sensitive stomachs are told to start on one capsule. One capsule with dinner for the first week, a bit of a rumble on day three, full dose since week two with no problems. Fasting glucose is down too, which the doctor cared about most.

Everything before medication: oatmeal every morning, beans, fish, four miles a day, 22 pounds lost. LDL went from 172 to 169. Tears in the parking lot after that appointment. This page was the first place anyone explained that diet works on what goes in and the liver decides what comes out. Twelve weeks later, same diet, 138. Not against medication, just wanted the step in between tried first.

Four stars because it isn't magic. Plenty of posts claim cinnamon and vinegar cure cholesterol. This is slow, boring and real. Two capsules with dinner, nothing to feel, and the 12-week test showed LDL down 19 points, triglycerides down much more. The GP said that's roughly a low-dose statin's effect. Boring and real will do.

At 57 with an LDL of 155, the doctor said borderline, check again in a year. Father had a heart attack at 61, so waiting a year didn't sit right. This was the only option that explained why a careful diet had stalled and had a placebo-controlled trial behind it. Two with dinner, retested at 12 weeks: 131. The doctor saw the printout and is now the one saying keep going.

Mediterranean diet, 10g of saturated fat, 35g of fiber, everything weighed. Torture, and LDL dropped 6 points. Cheese and butter were the only joy left. With these handling the liver end, the rules relaxed to something a human can sustain, and the last panel beat the strict-diet one. Down 28 points. The nutritionist couldn't explain it.

Cardiologist wanted Repatha after two statins failed. Insurance denied it twice and the appeal is eight months old. On a fixed income at 66, a fortune a month out of pocket wasn't happening. These work on the same receptors the injection does, by a different route, and ships in two days with no prior authorization. Not Repatha, and nobody pretends it is. LDL is 31 points lower than it was while waiting on a fax.

The worry with anything new is what it does in ten years. What settled it: the two-year Lancet trial in over a thousand people with nothing serious, and 70 years as a licensed medicine in China. Those studies are linked on the page, not just mentioned. Eight months in at 70: liver numbers unchanged, LDL down from 178 to 149, no aches. On metformin for prediabetes plus high cholesterol, so the pharmacist got a call first, as the label says. Fine, but watch the sugars. Good advice, because it's strong. Fasting glucose dropped from 112 to 98 in a month. Taken with dinner, never at bedtime, after one shaky night. LDL down 24 points at 12 weeks. Being shackled to a prescription for life at 59 was the fear. This is framed as 12 weeks and then a test, not forever. The doctor knows everything. LDL came down from 168 to 137 at the 12-week check. Sensitive to everything. Half a 5mg statin caused cramps. Most berberine is 1,000mg or more in one capsule, which would have been a disaster. These are 600mg each, delayed release, and sensitive people are told to start on one with food and split across meals. One a day for two weeks, then two. Zero stomach trouble, a small miracle. Four months on: LDL down 26, triglycerides down 60, fish oil and plant sterols dropped.

No trust in pharma, not much in supplements either. After six years of fighting, the compromise with the cardiologist was rosuvastatin 5mg three times a week, the lowest dose that didn't wreck the legs. That got LDL to 148. These were added with his okay, since it's a different pathway and avoids the enzyme the statin uses. Pharmacist checked interactions first. Three months later 119, triglycerides way down, still on the tiny statin dose. The smallest amount of drug that does the job.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nativia Berberine?

1,200mg of berberine HCl per two-capsule serving, from Berberis aristata bark. Same form and dose as the trials, in two 600mg capsules taken together with a meal. Hypromellose capsules with delayed-release technology, so they open further along the gut. Only other ingredients: rice flour and magnesium stearate. Every lot tested for potency, heavy metals, solvents and microbes.

Berberine has been a licensed medicine in China for 70 years. In 2004, Nature Medicine called it "a new cholesterol-lowering drug" with "a unique mechanism distinct from statins."*

Isn’t berberine the “natural Ozempic” thing? Why cholesterol?

That's the nickname because it works like metformin on blood sugar. What not many people know is that berberine also works, separately, on the liver's LDL receptors, and has robust evidence for supporting LDL cholesterol levels.

I’ve done the diet and my LDL hasn’t moved. Why would this be any different?

Because they work on opposite ends. Diet reduces what goes in. Your LDL is set by how fast your liver pulls it out, through receptors on its cells. Too few receptors, and you can eat perfectly and the number stays put. Berberine raises the number of receptors by protecting the message that tells a liver cell to build one.* That's why the trials worked in people already eating well.

“Lost 28 pounds, walk five miles a day, haven't touched butter in two years, and my LDL went UP eleven points. This was the first thing that explained why.” — Tom B., Verified Customer

How much does it actually lower LDL?

Across 14 placebo-controlled trials and 1,447 people, LDL fell about 18 mg/dL (0.46 mmol/L) on average. In the best-designed trial of people with high cholesterol, 21% in three months. The toughest trial, in people not selected for high cholesterol, found about 8 mg/dL.* Higher starting LDL, bigger drop.

I had awful side effects on a statin. Will this do the same thing?

It shouldn't. Statins block an enzyme that runs in every cell, including muscle, and that pathway also makes CoQ10. That's the leading explanation for the aches, fatigue and fog. Berberine doesn't touch that enzyme, and less than 1% reaches your bloodstream. Its side effects are gut-related and dose-dependent, which is what the dosing plan is for.*

“Thighs on fire, couldn't remember words, three hours of sleep. Twelve weeks on these, no aches, sleeping again, LDL at 139.” — Margaret H., Verified Customer

Can I take it alongside my statin, ezetimibe or other medication?

Often yes, but ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Alongside a statin the mechanisms are different and additive, the honest case for keeping a statin small. But berberine inhibits three liver enzymes (CYP3A4, 2D6, 2C9). Simvastatin, atorvastatin and lovastatin go through CYP3A4, so their levels could rise. Rosuvastatin and pravastatin largely don't. Ezetimibe is fine in principle.* Same check for warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, metoprolol, cyclosporine and tacrolimus. Show your pharmacist the label.

I’m prediabetic, or on metformin or insulin. Can I take it?

Prediabetic and not on medication? This is one of the best reasons to take it. Across 37 trials, HbA1c fell 0.63% without causing low blood sugar, because berberine only acts when glucose is high.* On metformin, a sulfonylurea or insulin? Talk to your doctor first, because the effects add up. One person in our research saw their glucose monitor dip below 60 overnight and fixed it by taking it with dinner instead of at bedtime. Take it with a meal, not at bedtime.

Can it replace my statin?

No. Statins, ezetimibe and PCSK9 inhibitors have trials showing fewer heart attacks and strokes. Berberine has trials showing lower LDL, apoB and blood sugar, and no outcome trial. It belongs before a statin, for the person told to wait, or beside a small one, for the person who can only tolerate a low dose. Never stop or change a prescribed medication without talking to the person who prescribed it.

I have high Lp(a), plaque on a calcium scan, FH, or I’ve had a heart attack. Is this for me?

Not on its own. Nothing over the counter lowers Lp(a). With known plaque, a high calcium score, familial hypercholesterolemia, or a prior heart attack or stroke, you need therapies with outcome trials, and your clinician should be driving. Berberine is a dietary supplement, NOT a replacement for medication or medical advice.

I don’t want to be on a pill for the rest of my life. Isn’t this just another one?

Fair. Nativia is a 12-week protocol with a retest, not a life sentence. Take it for 12 weeks, get a lipid panel, and decide what's next with a real number and your doctor in the room. If it moved, keep going, because the effect wears off when you stop. If it didn't, you get a full refund.

Does it help with anything besides LDL?

Yes. Blood sugar: HbA1c down about half a point, comparable to metformin in small head-to-heads. Triglycerides and apoB: down versus placebo. Inflammation: hs-CRP down in the 2026 trial.* Waist: modest at best. What it doesn't do: weight loss, blood pressure, Lp(a) or liver fat.

How do I take it, and how long does a bottle last?

Two capsules once a day with a meal. That's the full 1,200mg. If your stomach is sensitive, start with one capsule a day for the first week, or split the two across breakfast and dinner, then build up. Take it with food, not at bedtime, and drink plenty of water. 60 capsules per bottle: a month's supply, a little under $1 (USD) a day.

How soon will I see results, and when should I retest?

You won't feel your LDL changing. Fasting glucose can move within the first week. Cholesterol trials measured at 8 to 16 weeks, and the 21% trial ran 12.* So don't test before 8 weeks, and plan a full panel at 12: LDL, apoB if you can get it, triglycerides, fasting glucose. 76% of surveyed customers reported improvement.*

Is it safe long term? What about side effects?

Yes. Research has shown no increase in liver or kidney problems. 1,108 people took it daily for two years in a Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology trial with no serious adverse events.* Side effects are gut-related and dose-dependent. Made in a GMP-certified facility, every lot screened for heavy metals, solvents and microbes.

Don't take it if pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. Check with your doctor first if you take a statin, a blood thinner, diabetes medication, metoprolol, cyclosporine or tacrolimus, or have liver disease.

When should I see a doctor instead?

Before you start, if any medication from the above question applies to you. Nativia supports your body's own LDL clearance. Nativia is NOT a substitute for a diagnosis, a prescription, or a licensed clinician.

How long does shipping take?

Orders ship within 1–2 business days. Most customers receive their order within 5–12 business days depending on region. You'll receive tracking information as soon as your order ships.

What if it doesn’t work for me?

Then you get every penny back. Take Nativia for up to 60 days, and if you're not happy with your results, email us for a full refund. No hard feelings.
